Local History, Regional Dimension and Prospects
of the Historical Research

The essay proposes, in a synthetical way, to run back over the essential stages of local historiography in Italy. It has not been easy: by one side it was exalted as a sort of localism ideology and was rejected from the Academy by the other one. Local history however, has asserted itself since the seventies and its methodological matrix has progressively strengthened. Today a large number of historians that study local history tend to take references from themes and general concepts. Another part of researchers that seem to retry on local history for instinctive fear of a lost identity face off the global dimension of the historical and political process. Today the challenge of a mature local history seems the comparison rather than the escape or the retreat.
